OPEN LETTER TO THE PRIME MINISTER ACKNOWLEDGING THE PASSING OF THE WHISTLE BLOWERS ACT AND TABLING OF THE ICAC BILL
21st February 2020
Dear Rt. Hon. Prime Minister James Marape,
SUBJECT: ACKNOWLEDGEMENT ON PASSING OF WHISTLEBLOWERS ACT AND TABLING OF ICAC BILL
We the Civil Society Organizations (CSO) of Papua New Guinea greet you, Hon Prime Minister and members of the 9th Parliament, and thank you for this milestone achievement – the passing of the Whistleblowers Act and the tabling of the ICAC Bill.
The CSOs have been asking for these important instruments for many years.
In order to Take Back PNG, there are many things we can do together as a country, but we believe that we need stringent and prudent management of our Land and our natural resources. Special Agriculture Business Lease (SABL) in particular is a contentious issue and we want to take this opportunity to ask your government to complete the process of addressing corruption by (1) action all recommendations by the Commission Of Inquiry (COI) on SABL, and (2) propose for establishment of Freedom of Information Bill. Freedom of Information is clearly stipulated by our National Constitution so citizens can meaningfully participate in PNG’s development in an open and transparent manner that is fully realized.
We have also noted your speech in a publication “Rome was not built in one day or one year, we have a long way to go in PNG but we making the first correct painful baby steps.” The voice of civil society in PNG has always helped government to realize what the right ways are to wisely manage our country and serve its people.
We will continue to be doing our part to provide the much needed checks and balances to assist your government to make the much-needed changes for the greater good of our country Papua New Guinea.
We thank you and your government for your efforts in helping to save Papua New Guinea.
We pledge our continued support to help fight corruption in Papua New Guinea.
